Pharmacist Marla Ahlgrimm recalls a watershed moment in the early 1980s that let her know it was time to open Madison Pharmacy Associates. “One morning, I came into work to find the owner of the pharmacy–he was called “Doc”–standing at the end of the long dispensing counter in his white jacket glaring at me,” Marla Ahlgrimm remembers. “His voiced boomed as he asked, ‘Why are you wasting our time, Marla? All women are neurotic and should be on Valium!’” In other words, says the founder of Madison Pharmacy Associates, “He wanted me to stop what I was doing in the area of PMS and women’s health.” But Marla Ahlgrimm’s work was far from over. And after more than three decades in the field of women’s health, Marla Ahlgrimm and her team Madison Pharmacy Associates have helped hundreds of thousands of women.
The visionary behind Madison Pharmacy Associates tells the story like this. From the time Marla Ahlgrimm was a college student at the University of Wisconsin, she knew she wanted to accomplish something innovative in the practice of pharmacy. She just didn’t know what it would be – or when the opportunity to found a business like Madison Pharmacy Associates would arise. One thing was for certain. Whenever the opportunity presented itself, Marla Ahlgrimm would be ready.
Opportunity presented itself in 1978, says the founder of Madison Pharmacy Associates, while Ahlgrimm was working at a pharmacy in Wisconsin. A patient who was suffering severely from overwhelming fatigue, depression, and mood swings caught Marla Ahlgrimm’s attention. Around that same time, she saw an article in a local newspaper about a woman with similar symptoms who was being treated in Europe. “Another co-worker and I went off to the medical school library and we learned that in Europe there was a name for what she suffered with: premenstrual syndrome,” the founder of Madison Pharmacy Associates explains. Noting the treatment for this syndrome in Europe, natural progesterone given as a suppository, Marla Ahlgrimm and her co-worker formulated a treatment for their first PMS patient, which made her the first woman in America to be treated for PMS using progesterone.
Over time, the work of Marla Ahlgrimm gained attention. Physicians would routinely stop into the pharmacy and ask what she was working on. When Marla Ahlgrimm would describe her work, each doctor would mention a patient with similar symptoms. While many of these physicians had already been prescribing progesterone, Marla Ahlgrimm would explain the benefits of natural progesterone as compared to medroxyprogesterone or Provera.
Soon after, Marla Ahlgrimm co-founded Madison Pharmacy Associates, the first pharmacy exclusively devoted to the needs of women. Through the compounding of unique hormonal formulations for each patient, combined with one-on-one consultations, Madison Pharmacy Associates grew to many times its original size. In 2011, Marla Ahlgrimm sold Madison Pharmacy Associates and today serves as President of Cyclin Pharmaceuticals, Inc., another company she founded. The company sells proprietary products for the women’s health market as well as ProCycle PMS and ProCycle Gold products. For more information, go online to www.cyclinpharma.com
